The "Pulling Things Off" Myth
A response to the many times people have told me "I could never pull that off"
Almost every time I wear my beret I get told, “I could never pull that off” or “Wow, only you could pull that off”. I get told that frequently about things I wear.
And to that… pulling things off/not pulling things off is all a myth, it’s all in your confidence.
If you feel truly comfortable and confident in what you are wearing it will look fantastic. If you don’t feel like yourself and have an aura of self-doubt, no you will not “pull it off”.
Unless you’re adhering to a work dress code, the only limitations to what you can and can’t “pull off” are self-assigned. The only thing that differentiates me from the people who don’t think they can pull things off is my propensity towards fashion risks. I allow myself to walk the sometimes thin line between “ugly” and “cute”, probably sometimes falling on the “ugly” side. But I like to wear the things that I like and realize that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
What if Iris Apfel doubted if she could really pull off those big glasses and never did?
Or if
thought it would be “too much” to wear clothes in new and interesting ways?Or if any of the “Portugal girlies” woke up and thought, no I actually can’t pull of this many colors and patterns at once?
If they had, they wouldn’t be the fashion icons we know and love them as today.
I think people put themselves in little boxes of aesthetic. ‘This doesn’t match my vibe’, ‘someone like me couldn’t wear this’, ‘I couldn’t pull this off’, etc.. I think exclusively dressing to a particular aesthetic while ignoring your own taste is silly. When you’re dressing for yourself and no one else, the world is your oyster.
You may think certain shaped clothes may suit you better, or that different colors may suit you better, but what always suits you best is confidence, whatever that looks like.
Wear what you like! Be confident! You can pull off anything!
