When you think denim on denim, it’s only natural to think Americana. So how did it earn this affectionate nickname?
In 1951, Bing Crosby was checking in to an upscale hotel in Vancouver. Crosby was in a denim on denim outfit and the concierge didn’t recognize the famous singer and refused him a room. When Levi’s caught wind of this incident they jumped into action, pulling off one of the most iconic reactive marketing stunts of all time. They made Crosby a double breasted denim tuxedo out of their classic 501 denim, ensuring that the next time he wore denim on denim he would not be turned away anywhere.
The tux featured copper rivets and a leather patch inside that read, "Notice to hotel men everywhere: This label entitles the wearer to be duly received and registered with cordial hospitality at any time and under any conditions." Crosby loved the set and it became his signature look while he was touring and promoting his film, Here Comes the Groom.
I love wearing a Canadian tuxedo. I’ve been wearing it all the time the last couple of months and I’m not tiring of it yet. And since it’s been on my mind I feel like I’m seeing it everywhere.
The Canadian tuxedo is the spaghetti of outfit recipes. Anyone can make it. Doesn’t matter what noodle (how the fit of the jeans or jacket is) or sauce (the color of the denim), it’s pretty hard to mess up. And it looks great on everyone!
All hail the Canadian tuxedo!
